What's the best lip balm?
Question:
From Alyssa...
Dear Al's Mom,
I've heard rumors about different types of lip balm/chapstick actually causing 'addictions' because of certain ingredients. What is the best type of chapped lip remedy out there? My lips will thank you!
Answer:
Good morning Alyssa! Lip Moisturizers!!! A girl's best friend! I wear moisturizing lipstick with SPF at work but when I get home I wash it off and
Put on lip moisturizer by Laura Mercier. I saw the news report last week that it's addictive but it's not an addiction like smoking, etc. It just feels good on our lips. I remembered that Real Simple Magazine had done a study on lip moisturizers so I looked it up on the web today. This was from their February, 2004 issue. It states "there's no such thing as too much lip balm". It's your first line of defense against chapped lips, says Jane Fortson, a dermatologist in Anchorage, Alaska. Try ChapStick or Carmex which contain a moisturizing ingredient such as lanolin or petrolatum. Wear a lip balm with SPF if you plan on spending more than 30 minutes outside. Real Simple pick was: Dermatone Moisturizing Lip Balm SPF 23 ($2.25, www.dermatone.com). Unlike many balms, it won't crystallize in cold weather. Also, avoid licking your lips. That dries them out even more.If your lips are really chapped, coat lips a couple of times a day with a heavy-duty emollient, such as Aquaphor Healing Ointment ($6.) which seals moisture into skin. That should rehydrate lips within a day or two.
"Happy Kissing"!!! Al's Mom
